John Gilbert of Worsley – agent of revolution.

Wednesday, October 19, 2016 - 19:30 to 21:00

Worsley Court House, Barton Road, M28 2PB

John Gilbert of Worsley is best known as the canal pioneer who introduced James Brindley to the Duke of Bridgewater and so sparked off the great movement which developed into ‘canal mania’.  As well as serving the Duke of Bridgewater as his land agent John Gilbert, along with his brother Thomas, was an entrepreneur who developed a staggering range of industrial and commercial enterprises. While Brindley and the Duke’s role in creating the Bridgewater is well known, many feel that the significant part that Gilbert played is not fully recognised. This talk by Peter Lead will help us understand more about the ‘third man’ behind the Bridgewater Canal, who went on to be such a big character in the ‘take off period’ of the Industrial Revolution. Peter is author of the book ‘Agents of Revolution’ about the Gilbert brothers.
