Mapping Memories

The Salford stretch of the Bridgewater Canal has more than its fair share of stories to tell. From its history, intrinsically linked to the Industrial Revolution, to the recollections, personal accounts and tall tales of the people who live and work in the area.

We worked with artist Bryony Wilson, local students, our volunteers and canal enthusiasts to collect a selection of stories and memories. Through research, workshops, meetings and canalside walks they have helped us to create a truly unique map. From the Duke of Bridgewater and James Nasmyth to scout camps and gongoozlers, it’s a map that combines both history and personal memories of the Bridgewater Canal.

This map shows just a few of these stories, you are sure to have your own…
