Railway worker Mark Charnley has just one message for people keen on improving the environment – go full steam ahead.

Mark, from Eccles, has been a Bridgewater Canal volunteer for more than six years because he’s proud of his local area.

“I enjoy being involved and it’s different to my regular job, “ said Mark.

“Along the Bridgewater Canal I have been involved in woodland management, clearing rubbish and fly tipping. I’ve helped with  historical research, consultations on canal projects and helped build benches, bat and bird boxes, paths, steps and a bug hotel (hibernaculum) or two.

“I am proud of our local heritage and hope that our efforts encourage others to appreciate it.  If you are proud of the area then get stuck in!”
